The overall goal of this project is to study the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in viticultural zones of the province of Mendoza, Argentina; the states of Queretaro and Baja California in Mexico; the Napa county (California) in USA; and the Designation of Origen Ribera del Duero (Castilla and Leon) in Spain. We will conduct a survey to study the effects of the pandemic in the wine industry in the zones of our interest.
Wineries: We will study government policies to counter the economic losses suffered by wine producers in each country. We will also tackle the main challenges confronted by wineries to continue operating, as well as analysing their specific strategies to survive as viable businesses during the crisis.
Wine grape growers:> We will analyze the problems growers have faced in the productive process during COVID-19 (grape growing and vineyard maintenance); the difficulties they have confronted in accessing workers and measures taken to protect them; as well as studying the problems faced by growers in commercializing their grape production.
Farm Labor Contractors or Temporary Service Companies : We will look into the challenges and concrete strategies adopted by these actors to recruit workers for the wine industry during the pandemic, as well as the measures taken to offer a safe work environment to the contracted workers.
Farmworkers: We are interested in learning about obstacles faced by farmworkers around mobility and access to employment during the pandemic, as well as changes around working and living conditions, risks, and access to protective working environments provided by employers and/or government(s) during the crisis.
